Bay County Prepares for Impact, Schools Closed, and State of Emergency Declared

As Hurricane Helene approaches, Bay County is bracing for its effects despite being on the western side of the storm. The Bay County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is operating at full activation, and officials are urging residents to stay informed and prepared as the storm intensifies.

Hurricane Helene’s Expected Impact

Hurricane Helene is expected to make landfall this evening on the Big Bend coast to the east of Bay County. Though Bay County remains outside the storm’s direct path, the county will still experience significant impacts. Heavy rainfall, which could cause flash flooding, and tropical storm force winds are anticipated this afternoon and evening. Dangerous marine conditions are expected at local beaches as well.

A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for Bay County, and residents are advised to monitor local media and official channels for updates. A flash flood warning has also been issued for the area.

Closures and Evacuations

In response to Hurricane Helene, several closures and changes have been announced:

  • Bay District Schools: All schools will be closed on Thursday, September 26, and Friday, September 27.
  • Bay County Government Offices: The offices of the Bay County Board of County Commissioners are closed on Thursday and will reopen on Friday with normal business hours.
  • M.B. Miller County Pier: The pier is closed on Thursday and will reopen Friday at 6 a.m.
  • Steelfield Landfill: The landfill will close at 1 p.m. on Thursday and reopen Friday during normal business hours.

At this time, no evacuation orders have been issued for Bay County. However, residents are encouraged to know their evacuation zones and stay informed through the county’s emergency notification system, AlertBay.

State of Emergency Declared

Bay County Commission Chairman Tommy Hamm signed a local state of emergency on September 24, 2024. This declaration will help streamline the county’s efforts to manage the storm’s impacts and aid in potential reimbursements for any damage or costs incurred.

Preparedness Efforts Underway

Bay County crews have been working diligently to prepare for Hurricane Helene. Workers are clearing ditches and waterways, fueling vehicles, securing equipment, and testing generators. The county’s Utilities Department is taking steps to ensure uninterrupted water supply, including opening the Deerpoint Reservoir drawdown gates.

Officials urge residents to prepare their disaster supply kits, which should include essential items such as water, non-perishable food, medications, and flashlights. Those with medical or functional needs are encouraged to register on the Special Needs Shelter website.

Stay Informed

Bay County has activated its Citizens Information Center to answer storm-related questions. Residents can call (850) 248-6090 for information. Official updates will also be available through the county’s social media channels and the National Hurricane Center.

With Hurricane Helene expected to bring significant rainfall and wind, residents should remain vigilant and prepared for any potential impacts throughout Thursday and the weekend.
