Boosting Literacy Education

Florida Department of Education Hosts Florida’s 2024 Summer Literacy Institute to Empower Literacy Instruction in VPK-Grade 5 Classrooms

TALLAHASSEE, FL The Florida Department of Education and Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr., launched the 4th annual Summer Literacy Institute. The three-day event supports districts and schools by expanding literacy education resources and effectively implementing literacy education in VPK-Grade 5 classrooms statewide. The Institute provides professional learning opportunities for literacy leadership teams at the early childhood, school and district levels. More than 1,200 educators and literacy leaders are attending the institute.

“Literacy education plays an important role in the academic success of our students, and it allows students to open doors for themselves that they may not have dreamed possible otherwise,” said Florida Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr. “The 2024 Summer Literacy Institute is a testament to Florida’s commitment to providing educators with the tools and resources they need to ensure that every student is successful.”

The primary goals of the Summer Literacy Institute include increasing educator knowledge of the science of reading and evidence-based literacy practices and expanding knowledge of Florida’s K-5 B.E.S.T. (Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking) English Language Arts Standards and the Florida Early Learning and Developmental Standards for Four Years Old to Kindergarten. Educators were provided access to resources that support effective implementation of the standards and utilize assessment data to inform instruction and intervention. The Institute also facilitated professional networking opportunities among more than 1,200 literacy leaders and educators in attendance.

The 2024 Summer Literacy Institute is made possible by the Florida Education Foundation, a direct-support organization for the Florida Department of Education, and The Florida Lottery. Following the VPK-Grade 5 Summer Literacy Institute, Regional Literacy Institutes will take place for Grades 6-12 later in the month.
