Beware Storm Scammers: Protect Your Home & Wallet!
Important Message from Sheriff Ford: Don’t Deal With Unlicensed Contractors
Bay County Sheriff Tommy Ford released a message today to provide important information for those beginning home repairs after yesterday’s inclement weather.
In Florida, any structural repairs, (including window and door replacement,) HVAC, plumbing, and electrical work REQUIRE a state issued contractor’s license. The Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation, (DBPR,) issues these licenses to those who have demonstrated appropriate knowledge and proficiency in their field of work.
DBPR licensure can be quickly verified at the DBPR website . It is important to note that many unlicensed contractors will attempt to provide a potential customer a number issued when they registered their LLC. This is not the same as a contractor’s license and is often an indication of an unlicensed person falsely representing themselves as a licensed contractor. If verification of licensure is attempted through the Sunbiz website , this is not a valid contractor license number.
Another item of concern is the full assignment of insurance benefits to the contractor, which was formerly known as an “AOB” or other similarly worded contract language. Contractors should never ask for a full payment prior to any work being completed.
Sheriff Ford urges residents to beware of any contractor attempting to collect full payment before work is begun or insisting on the signing of a contract providing direct payment to the contractor from the insurance company. Normally payments to contractors are made in “draws” which are payments made upon completion of phases of work. Full payment requested prior to beginning the job can leave homeowners without the funds needed to complete work should the contractor leave the area or fail to complete the job.
If any local homeowner has questions regarding the proper licensure of a contractor, or believes they’re the victim of fraud, please contact your local law enforcement agency. You can also contact the Bay County Sheriff’s Office at 850-747-4700.
