Florida Forest Service Joins The Mix
Segment 1: Drought and Debris from Hurricane Michael
The Mix
During this morning’s show, we had two officials from the Florida Forest Service join to talk about the current status of the wildfires, and future prevention. Joe Zwierzchowski from Pensacola and Todd Schroeder from Tallahassee joined to give the public insight into the wildfires going on in the area.
We talked about the aftermath of Hurricane Michael, and the reasons why controlled burns are not always feasible. You can hear more information on the firebreaks that the Forestry Division has implemented and how that was a big help to prevent wildfires from reaching the Clifford Chester Sims State Veterans Nursing Home.
Segment 2: Burn Ban and what that means for each county.
The Mix
Todd Schroeder spoke about the current Burn Ban going on and what that means for individuals in the community. There are various ways that the Florida Forestry Division has done community outreach through individual counties. You can find information on Burn Bans, how to prep your home and yard, and much more at bewildfirereadyfl.com.
Segment 3: What YOU can do to be prepared.
The Mix
There are many ways to prepare your home for a disaster. One of them would be what Joe Zwierzchowski calls a defensible space. This includes ways to protect your space outside by removing debris around your home that can cause a wildfire, and keeping your grass cut down. The 4 zones to prepare your yard and information on how you can prepare them can be found here, www.fdacs.gov.
