City of Panama City Beach Prepares for flooding
Panama City Beach, Florida – As Subtropical Storm Alberto moves into the Gulf from the Yucatan Peninsula this weekend, there is the possibility of heavy rainfall and the potential for localized flooding in the City of Panama City Beach.
According to City Officials, the area has received above average rainfall over the last two weeks so the amount of time and rain needed to create flood conditions is reduced.
The City’s Public Works Department is bracing for up to six inches of rain, based on the latest National Hurricane Center models. This amount of rain increases the potential for roadway and other localized flooding. Panama City Beach stormwater crews have been out inspecting drains, making sure they are free and clear for proper drainage. City Engineer Kelly Jenkins said the department has also spent part of Friday visiting construction sites to mitigate any potential water flow problems.
Alf Coleman Road and a portion of Thomas Drive are two areas within the city limits which are prone to flooding. Signage is being put out to warn drivers of the potential for flooded streets and possible road closures. Panama City Beach officials ask that motorists be especially careful driving and walking in these areas, and throughout the city during this Memorial Day weekend. Even though the forecast calls for rain, they still expect a lot of holiday traffic in the city this weekend.
Sand Bags:
Public Works is also providing sand bags for residents who want them. Each resident can receive up to 10 bags. These may be picked up at the Waste Water Treatment Plant at the north end of Gulf Boulevard. Residents are asked to bring ID.
