“You have been entrusted to learn The Secrets of All Secrets. Once you know them, you will know everything. To deny the opportunity to learn The Secrets of All Secrets will leave you haunted and feeling soulless, your life meaningless, for the remainder of your days (from The Secrets of All Secrets).” In The Secrets of All Secrets, Douglas Wells has managed to cleverly weave together wit, satire, adventure and mystery into a novel that once started; the reader will feel compelled to join in the journey for The Secrets of All Secrets. The reader is first introduced to Zane a musician and seminary school dropout who after getting dumped by his girlfriend and fired from another band is questioning his future and the direction of his life. A mysterious messenger leaves a simple thumb drive for Zane, and once he inserts the drive in his computer his unbelievable adventure begins. Zane is later joined by Dali, who also received a mysterious thumb drive. At first meeting, the pair dislikes each other, but is now thrust into the same quest by this mysterious messenger and the need to discover the Secrets. Zane and Dali are interesting and believable characters that represent the “everyday Joe” on an unbelievable adventure. The couple travels throughout north Florida in search of The Secrets of All Secrets, all the while being tracked by government agents, the hired hand of a major corporation and two anti-government separatists. The three antagonists groups represent those in our society today who would also like to have possession of The Secrets of All Secrets to use for their own benefit. We find Zane and Dali only a step in front of their pursuers throughout the adventure, which takes them on a journey through north Florida as they experience many of the peculiarities of the area. Zane and Dali learn about themselves and each other throughout their journey together. Wells does an excellent job of not taking the mystery adventure genre too seriously, giving the reader a mystery and a laugh at the same time. Great story!
